4Rกับการลดใช้พลังงาน

หลัก 4R คือ?

Eco Designมีกรอบความคิดหลักคือ ครอบคลุมวงจรให้เป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม ลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม โดยสามารถแบ่งกระบวนการออกเป็นช่วงๆ ให้ชัดเจนได้ คือ
การวางแผนการผลิต (Planning Phase) > ช่วงการออกแบบ (Design Phase) > ช่วงการผลิต (Manufacturing Phase) > ช่วงการนำไปใช้ (Usage Phase) > และช่วงการทำลายหลังการใช้เสร็จ (Disposal Phase)

ซึ่่งหลักการสำคัญก็คือ หลัก 4 Rนั่นเอง

Reduceหรือลดก็คือการลดการใช้ทรัพยากรในช่วงต่าง ๆ ของวงจรผลิตภัณฑ์ เช่น การลดการใช้ทรัพยากรในการออกแบบ เริ่มตั้งแต่ลดการใช้กระดาษในการออกแบบไปเลย ลดการใช้ทรัพยากรในการออกแบบ ลดอัตราการใช้วัตถุดิบในกระบวนการผลิต ลดอัตราการใช้พลังงานในกระบวนการผลิต ลดอัตราการใช้พลังงานในระหว่างการใช้งาน
Reuse หรือใช้ซ้ำทั้งที่เป็นการใช้ใหม่ในผลิตภัณฑ์เดิม หรือผลิตภัณฑ์ใหม่ก็ตาม หรือที่เรียกว่า การออกแบบเพื่อการนำกลับมาใช้ซ้ำ (Design for Reuse) เช่น การออกแบบให้ผลิตภัณฑ์แต่ละรุ่นมีชิ้นส่วนบางชิ้นส่วนที่ใช้ร่วมกันได้ เมื่อรุ่นแรกหยุดการผลิตแล้วยังสามารถเก็บคืนและนำบางชิ้นส่วนมาใช้ในการผลิตรุ่นต่อไปได้
Recycleหรือการนำกลับมาใช้ใหม่หมายถึง การนำผลิตภัณฑ์ หรือชิ้นส่วนของผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ใช้แล้วมาผ่านกระบวนการผลิตใหม่ แล้วนำกลับมาใช้โดยการออกแบการใช้งานผลิตภัณฑ์เพื่อการนำกลับมาใช้ใหม่ จะต้องเอื้อต่อกระบวนการนำกลับมาใช้ใหม่ เช่น การออกแบบให้ถอดประกอบได้ง่าย (Design for Disassembly) การออกแบบเพื่อการนำกลับมาใช้ใหม่ (Design for Recycle) เช่น การออกแบบผลิตภัณฑ์โดยใช้วัตถุดิบพลาสติกหรือกระดาษที่ง่ายต่อการนำกลับมาใช้
Repairหรือการซ่อมบำรุงก็คือการออกแบบให้ผลิตภัณฑ์ง่ายต่อการซ่อมบำรุงได้ง่ายจะเป็นการยืดอายุช่วงชีวิตของการใช้งาน (Extended Usage Life) ซึ่งท้ายที่สุดสามารถลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมได้ เช่น ออกแบบให้เปลี่ยนอะไหล่ได้ง่าย
